IS HOUNDSTOOTH PRINT THE NEW NEUTRAL?

A blogpost about houndstooth print to freshen up your look for Spring 2023

Is houndstooth print a neutral? I think so – it feels like it’s the new Queen of print and perhaps leopard print should take a side step…

A controversial opinion, maybe. We all lean in ‘a lot’ to our favourite prints, however houndstooth print is certainly having a moment!

It’s been around the last couple of years; this Spring 2023 it feels like it’s everywhere – in all the fashion categories and I’ve also seen quite a bit in mens fashion too – perfect for sharing if you can!

Houndstooth print oozes classic, modern and easy styling – the pieces can work well for dressing up or down and can freshen up an all-black or all-cream look. Whilst Houndstooth print has evolved into many colourways rather than the traditional black and ecru cream; the tradition is my favourite and lends itself well to being a neutral.

If you haven’t tried a houndstooth print  before, then dip your toe into accessories, particular a good bag, I recommend a tote as a good starting point.

Investment pieces like a wool coat or a blazer, buy the best you can afford as this print can, from some brands, can look really cheap.

If you really wish to treat yourself and looking for pieces that are unlikely to date… the queen of houndstooth is definitely Anine Bing – her Nico houndstooth print bag has been on my wish list for some time (… a one day… little treat… if I ever can…).

Ready to dip your toe in? Or ready to look at investing in more, here is my recommended style edit to give this neutral print a go!

Hello. Just a comment about houndstooth. It’s not usually a print but historically a woven fabric made from wool. Harris tweed is any fabric locally died from local sheep’s wool and woven in the homes of people in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. It manufacture is strictly governed by an act of Parliament. Donegal tweed comes from Ireland. You’re more likely to find Harris tweed houndstooth which also adds to the resale-ability of fine clothing.
The beauty of fine wools from the Isles is in the artistry of the dyes used on wool fibers then combined/woven using a number of differing techniques.

That’s very interesting, thank you for taking the time to comment. I agree that it’s not necessarily a print, but in the world of styling we tend to refer to anything that has a pattern, as a print.
